Samsung Galaxy Storage Full but No Files? How to Find and Clear Hidden Cache

by Ishaan Seth September, 2026

You’ve moved all your photos and videos to cloud storage or an external hard drive, then deleted them all from your Samsung Galaxy phone’s internal storage. Now your phone’s storage breakdown shows that videos, photos, and files occupy only a few megabytes, yet your phone is still showing that 90% of its memory is full. You can’t download new apps, and the apps already installed are not working properly, let alone updating. It’s frustrating, but it doesn't mean that your phone is broken or at the end of its life.

There are indeed files that are taking up space in your device’s internal memory storage, what we call ghost storage. They just don’t show up in the file browser you’re using to check for files to delete.

where does samsung storage actually go?

When you buy a Samsung Galaxy phone with 256 GB or 512 GB internal storage, this space is used for everything from the required files to install and run Android on the device to software and app updates, not just photos and videos you take with the phone. This is why, often, the most memory consumption will be found in apps. Here are some of the items that quietly occupy your phone’s memory in what’s known as “ghost storage”:

Apps and App cache

The space an app occupies on your phone is not just the app files themselves. As you use the app, it accumulates and saves data over time. This data is saved in additional memory spaces, making the space narrower and narrower over time.

System storage

This category can be confusing because it not only includes the necessary files for Android to run on your Galaxy phone, but it also includes the mysteriously named category “Other”. This category includes all the downloaded apps’ data, such as streamed Netflix movies, offline music, and the huge TikTok database, which, without you granting the necessary permission, the Samsung storage tool cannot sort through and clear out.

Smart Switch leftovers

When you use Smart Switch to transfer data from an old Galaxy phone to a new one, or the phone’s backup process is interrupted, the phone creates massive temporary data containers, tens of gigabytes that never get deleted.

Samsung Cloud and Gallery sync cache

When a photo or a video is synced to a cloud such as OneDrive or Google Photos, instead of deleting the local copy of the file on the phone to conserve memory space, the phone keeps a full-sized version of the photo/video locally, taking up unnecessary space.

Media from chatting and messaging apps

Apps such as WhatsApp, Snapchat, and Telegram download and save any files you receive, including photos, videos, memes, voice notes, filters, and PDFs, to hidden cache folders that system cleanup tools usually don’t access or empty.

Downloaded files folder

When you download an image or a PDF file more than once, your phone doesn’t overwrite the existing version of the same file even if it’s unchanged. This is how you end up with unnecessary and unused files piling up in your download folder.

how to check what's actually using your storage

Now that you know what ghost storage looks like, you need to know for sure which of these categories is occupying the largest space of your phone’s memory. Go to Settings → Battery and Device Care → Storage.

Take note of the largest category and follow this table to know which data can be deleted and which must stay untouched.

Category

Action

Reason

How / Where to Delete

Smart Switch leftovers

✅ Delete fully

No purpose after transfer is complete

My Files → Internal Storage → SmartSwitch folder. Also check Internal Storage → Samsung → backup

Downloaded files folder

✅ Delete fully

Duplicates and unused files, no system link

My Files → Internal Storage → Download. Sort by size to clear the largest files first

App cache

🔶 Delete selectively

Safe, but distinguish cache from app data; do not clear app data

Settings → Apps → select app → Storage → Clear Cache. Or: Settings → Battery and Device Care → Storage → Clean Now for a bulk clear

Cloud sync local copies

🔶 Delete after verifying backup

Risk of permanent loss if backup isn't confirmed first

Google Photos: Library → Free up space (only appears once backup is confirmed). Samsung Gallery: Settings → Sync with Samsung Cloud → Free up device storage

Messaging app media

🔶 Filter by size and relevance

Mixed content; sort before deleting; not everything is unwanted

My Files → Internal Storage → WhatsApp → Media. Telegram: My Files → Internal Storage → Telegram. Sort by size and delete the largest files first

System OS files

🔴 Do not touch

Core Android function; deletion causes instability or boot failure

Not accessible via standard file browser. If a tool claims access, do not use it

"Other" storage

🔴 Mostly avoid

OS-controlled with limited safe user access

Only safe action: My Files → Internal Storage → Android → data — delete folders belonging to apps you have already fully uninstalled. Do not use third-party cleaner apps

your options if storage is a recurring problem

If you take all the necessary steps, from checking the memory to clearing the majority of unused files, and a few weeks later, the full-memory problem recurs, it’s time to take a different action than going into the phone’s folder and manually clearing files through My Files:

  1. Add a microSD card when possible
Some Samsung Galaxy phones, particularly the A-series, have a dedicated microSD slot for additional storage. If your phone’s model supports that, it’ll allow you to expand the internal storage space. Remember to check your specific model's specifications before purchasing a card, as Samsung's S-series flagships from the S21 onwards do not support microSD.

  2. Trade in your current Galaxy and upgrade
If storage fills up again within weeks of clearing it, the honest answer is that the device's capacity no longer matches your usage. At QwikFone, you can trade in your current Samsung Galaxy and put the value toward a refurbished model with more storage, verified at 85% battery health or above, and backed by a 12-month warranty and 30-day returns. before you go: steps to keep your samsung phone’s memory under control

  1. Run Samsung’s built-in maintenance tool “Battery and Device Care” and the Storage Clean feature monthly.
  2. Disable the auto-download feature on messaging apps such as WhatsApp and Telegram.
  3. Enable auto-backup for Google Photos or Samsung Cloud so that you can safely delete the local versions.
  4. Clear out your Downloads folder regularly; it fills up faster than most people expect.
  5. Clear apps' cache, especially after every major Android or One UI update
  6. When you uninstall an app, make sure that its data folder has been removed too.
  7. Remember to remove apps’ data when you uninstall apps you no longer use.

Most of the time, ghost storage is the main culprit in your Galaxy phone’s full memory rather than the photos and apps that you can see. So, make the necessary checks and clear the cache before you decide to delete important files or uninstall apps you’d rather keep otherwise.
